Does anyone know about TVs and power surges?
I bought a brand new LG LCD tv at the beginning of february (not even two month ago). Today my landlord was checking the voltage in the outlets with a multi-meter and now my tv won't turn on. Normally when you press the power button it lights up a series of lights at the bottom and the clicks on. Now the lights at the bottom light up in sequence and the its like it powers down again and it just does that over and over again. It also makes this clicking noise and the screen flashes grey for a second every once in a while. If there are any electricans out there that may know what the problem is, I'd appreciate any advice. I'm really wondering if the tv was damaged by my landlord or if its just a faulty tv.
There is next to nothing that your landlord or anyone else could do to cause the problem you've described by simply testing power outlets. That's a totally passive operation that does not change incoming voltage or cause surges. About the worst thing that could have happened would have been for him to trip a breaker in the panel that serves your residence, but that would have interrupted power completely, and he would have seen that with his test and corrected it on the spot. You do have power to the set, so that's not the problem.
Whatever is ailing your TV is most likely caused by something entirely different, and the timing is only coincidental. Since it's brand new, I'd consider taking it back to the store for a full refund if it's still within the store's return period (i.e., 30 days at Best Buy or Wal-Mart, 90 days at Costco). Failing that, you should get a free warranty repair.
But first, get someone to independently check your power outlet, just to give you confidence that it absolutely has nothing to do with your problem, as I'm sure you'll find.
